Hello Crete...

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

One day you'll wake up, go out on your balcony with your frappe in hands and just won't believe your eyes as you'll feel like you're still dreaming…That would mean you've arrived to Crete - the island full of variety of sea colours, the island with the most welcoming people you can ever meet, the island with the extremly tasty tomatoes you've never tried before, the island where "siesta" lasts for ever

If you're expeting to read here about some ancient greeks, archeological sites or the Knossos "castle" i willl dissappoint you…my story is totally dedicated to sea, sun, beaches and food, as this was exactly the point of my coming here!
Some small advices from the beginning:
- try to avoid booking those fancy international "all inclusive" hotels with 5 swimming pools, 2 gyms, SPA and tennis corts - Crete is eager to be explored and those luxuries won't just let you feel the real athmosphere and taste of this island;
- rent a car, take a map and just start a ride from north cost to the south; from east to west and you will realize how everything around you changes while you drive (Club Cars will be one of the best option for the rent: they will match all your desires of price and quality and already in 15 minutes you'll be out on the road - believe me they are not worse then all that international airport car rentals);
- ignore your travel guides from the first day until the day they will take you back to the airport - all their "special offers" and "prices for you only" can't be trusted at all, just walk out of your hotel and you'll find more exiting advantures for the half price (or even less). Those people are like sharks who will eat all your travel budget at once and to be honest won't provide you with the deserved service.

- избегайте искушения забронировать огромные интернациональные отели с системой "все включено", 5 бассейнами, 2мя спорт залами, СПА и теннисными кортами - для этого ведь есть Египты и Турции - Крит жаждет, чтоб его исследовали, а весь этот сервис и роскошь просто не дадут вам почувствовать и увидеть всю ту атмосферу истинной Греции;

Of course, we've started our vacation with lying whole day on the beach in our small hotel Faedra Beach in the Ammoudara village. By the evening we've decided to take a walk along the seaside to the nearest city of Agios Nicolaos. We haven't even noticed those 8 km trip as the views were amazing - sea with its torquoise water and huge mountains somewhere far away - now it became clear why greeks are always relaxed and happy.
It took us a couple of hours to walk around this beautiful town and then to realize that all the car rents were already closed, so it was definitely the time for the dinner and wine.

After we've rented our red Peugeot 107, it was decided to make a small test drive first to some nearest beach in the mountains. The view we saw has just blown our minds - a magic hidden place in the paradise called  Voulisma beach. Although almost all beaches in Crete are free, they are always clean and well-equiped with all the facilities you might need. We've fallen asleep even for some hours there as the rote was like a lullaby for a child...

And when the night arrives and you don't feel like going to some club, just take something tasty and go to the beach. You won't need any SPA, as the silence with rote combined, moonlight pass in the sea, strawberries and a good company will relax you much more, then some guy who makes massages…just try and i am sure you'll like it!

The next trip was way longer to the east of the island to see the Vai Beach with its palms park. Greeks are sure that the Bounty ad was made exactly there :) I would doubt that of course, but the place is indeed unique with its small lagoons hidden from the entire world. We were there in the low season, so its emptiness made it even more perfect.

While going back through the island, especially at the sun set, just stop somewhere and feel like you're the only person on the entire island

If you are wondering where rich and famouse people like to spend their time on Crete, take a ride to Elunda - fancy small village with the most expensive hotels and villas on the whole island…In fact, the place is very cosy and it is pleasant to walk watching couples having dinners in small tavernas, children playing on the beach, elegant pensioners promenading along the sea side...

When we've felt we had seen enough of Mediterranian sea, we decided to sea the south cost of Crete and enjoy its Libyan Sea. So if you're staying somewhere near Agios Nicolaous, the fastes way to reach another side of the island is to go to the town of Ierapetra. Of course, you can spend some time walking around the city, but then go back in the car and have a ride along the sea side to the east. After 20-25 minutes you will notice small bluffy road to some hidden lagoon. Go there!!! The place is amazing with its own taverna and small beach. Not many people know about it, so you will feel yourself a unique guest. Libyan sea has deepper blue colour, is a little bit colder and lumpy with great waves - a perfect place for the different emotions and new experiences.

Crete is amazing! And two weeks are not enough to see every part of it! We've explored only 1/3 of it, but i am sure i will come back one day to see the west cost, as it is considered to be extemly different from other parts of the island and to meet again those super nice people and to eat again all the varieties of fish, meat and vegetables and to say "Hello!" again to my beloved sea…<3

P.S. To be honest, we did buy one tour from the travel agency…just wait for new post to hear about it ;)
